EVA BERKSON: Come in!
[DOOR OPENS]
NARRATOR 1: Living with a roommate can be daunting for incoming Cherubs.
NARRATOR 2: However, what starts with awkward conversations and wordless nights blossoms into a bond that lasts beyond the program’s end.
NARRATOR 1: We, roommates ourselves, interviewed other pairs of roommates, to get the inside scoop on duo dorm life.
JAKE: First up is Cara Huang and Eva Berkson of room 314.
CARA HUANG: So the right side of the room is my side. It’s a little bleaker because I wasn’t smart enough to bring some photos and plants like Eva did. This is my American flag I picked up at the Fourth of July parade. It wakes me up in the morning and I feel very patriotic.
NARRATOR 1: Cara’s stuffed animals made the trip with her to Evanston.
CARA: This is Gooser, this is Bamboo and this is Uh-Oh.
NARRATOR 2: Eva has photos of her family and friends tacked up above her desk.
EVA: Whenever I used to go to camp, I would always bring photos and some stuff just to make it feel more homey, so when I came here I thought I would do the same.
NARRATOR 1: Over the course of four weeks, Eva and Cara have become not just forced roommates, but true friends.
EVA: You want to be able to live well with the person, and obviously it would be super nice if you guys could be friends, and I feel so lucky that I have both.

[DOOR OPENING SOUND]
HAILEY LLOYD: Hi!
NARRATOR 2: Next up is room 303: Hailey Lloyd and Glennis Woosley.
NARRATOR 1: Here’s Glennis.
GLENNIS WOOSLEY: Our room layout was really awkward when we first got here, because we have a little corner of dead space, where my desk and my bed just leave a random area unattainable. So, it was really awkward, which I think also might be one of the reasons why I don’t care to keep it super nice.
NARRATOR 1: Hailey and Glennis quickly became friends on the first day.
HAILEY: The first time when I met Glennis, I didn’t know her that well, but I thought that she was super laid back and chill. We actually made conversation pretty well the first day.
GLENNIS: We bounced off of each other. And we ended up having conversations until 2 a.m. for 4 nights in a row. It was fun, and I love you, and I appreciate those moments. But our sleep schedules were really bad for a moment there.
HAILEY: It’s still messed up.
[KNOCKING SOUND]
BRADEN STONE: Welcome to our crib.
NARRATOR 2: Here’s Braden Stone and Kai Shah of room 408.
KAI SHAH: On my desk is just some random books and stuff and some snacks and a football and my dope sunglasses.
NARRATOR 1: Braden and Kai’s room had a slightly off-putting odor on the day we stopped by.
BRADEN: It comes from two sources. One, spoiled banana that was left in our trash can from the first day of camp to about ten minutes ago. Second source, laundry, he enjoys leaving it on the floor for like five days, I don’t mind. It’s a good pastime. Favorite pastime of my roommate.
NARRATOR 2: The two have fun long into the night.
BRADEN: Give him a kiss on the head.
[LAUGHTER]
BRADEN: When I was asleep maybe you did that.
KAI: Yeah. I’m just kidding.
NARRATOR 1: The two know their combined strengths and are not afraid to share them.
BRADEN: We—we have the most ball knowledge of any roommate duo.
KAI: We have more electricity than lightning.
NARRATOR 2: Well, that does it for roommate talk.
NARRATOR 1: Although it can be scary, roommates are often your quickest and closest cherub friends.
NARRATOR 2: From Cherubs Audio, this is Jake Lubin.
NARRATOR 1: And this is Leo Beirne. We’ll see you next time.
