Getting coffee, running along the lakeshore, and sprinting five minutes before class– these are all parts of cherubs’ mornings. Despite the variety of routines, cherubs do everything to avoid being late for lectures. Listen to find out how cherubs spend their time before morning classes.

Classes always start at 9 a.m., but there are 84 cherubs, and their morning routines are very different. Some wake up at 6:30 for a morning run, others wake up at 8:30 and sprint to class. Personally, I like to wake up at 7:00, the middle ground. I need food in the mornings.
Emerson Swift, founder of the Run Club, likes to start her day early.
EMERSON SWIFT: Usually I get up around 6:30, which is the time that my run club goes on their morning run. And then we run for two miles along the lakeshore.
After coming back, Emerson takes a shower and heads downstairs around 7:30.
EMERSON: I usually go downstairs to the lobby or the great room in Jones, and I do some work. And I usually wait for my friends to come downstairs. And we meet usually at 8 a.m. in the lobby, and we walk to Allison for breakfast.
Emerson’s roommate, Abby Kronenberg, doesn’t join her for the run. Here’s how Emerson describes it:
EMERSON: I am her morning alarm because she can’t wake up to an alarm.

ABBY KRONENBERG: By the time she comes back from her run, her walking through the door wakes me up. So I know that’s when I can start getting ready. So yeah, Emerson is my alarm.
Two hours after Emerson’s alarm, another cherub, Allie Deutsch, is just waking up.
ALLIE DEUTSCH: For my typical morning routine, I think I set my alarm for around 8:20. Alarm goes off, get up, I pick up my alarm, and I set it for 8:25, and then 8:30, and then 8:32, and then 8:35, and then I’m a little late.
On the very first day of class, Allie was spitlisted. She turned over her entire room, looking for her purple toothbrush, but it was nowhere to be found. By the time she got to the lecture, she was late. She still sets her alarm to go off minutes before class.

When asked if this is every day,
ALLIE: It’s more mornings than it should be.
Other Cherubs completely changed their routines as we got deeper into the program.
Grace Sharma started with ambition, waking up at 7 a.m. She and her friends would go to downtown Evanston for breakfast.
GRACE SHARMA: I really like this place called Cupitol.
However, after a few weeks of intense assignments, Grace wanted to wake up later.
GRACE: I tend to do more of a wake up at 8:20, and leave Jones at 8:40. That didn’t work out too well for me today because I got spitlisted for waking up late.
One way or the other, cherubs will try to find a way to avoid the Spit List and make it to class on time.
