That’s the sound of a cherub watch party for the World Cup final, one of many events throughout the summer that formed bonds over sports, TV shows and movies. Here’s Charlie Edwards, describing his favorite World Cup moment.

CHARLIE EDWARDS: The Germany-Paraguay penalty shootout was a really great moment. I think that was the first match we watched together and we were still kind of getting to know each other, but just all being kind of bonded by this, like, crazy moment, I think that just shows, like, what’s so special about the World Cup because football really does bring people together in this way.

Jonathan Traub bravely signed into his YouTube TV account on the communal TV, here’s why he did it.

JONATHAN TRAUB: I really just wanted to spread the love. Everyone here is so amazing, and I really wanted to make sure that we could have time to spend with each other, just watching soccer and getting to know each other. And I thought that would only be possible if I provided my account and we were able to all watch together and really form community.

Another popular watch for cherubs was the TV show Love Island. Here’s Sascha Keller, one of the main organizers of the watch parties, describing all the connections she made.

SASCHA KELLER: I definitely think a lot, like, me and Mads became really good friends because of Love Island, and I think that a lot of the boys were drawn into it too, which is kind of the first time that we really talked to them. So I think that, like, having that experience, even though it required me to stay up late at night, like, I definitely think it fostered a lot of friendships.

Finally, let’s hear from someone unexpectedly drawn into the Love Island craze. Here’s Owen Zeller.

OWEN ZELLER: I think it wasn’t even really about, like, the content of the show, it was more about like the people that were there and like who I got to meet at that time. Because then, thinking back, like, the people that were there, like, those nights that we were watching that show, have been the people that I have kept in touch with all the weeks of the program.
