MADDIE SHOOP-GARDNER: Hello, is this Meher and Lucy’s room?
LUCY SHIRRELL: Yes.
MADDIE: Can you tell me a little bit about your first impression, maybe when you saw these? Meher is from London and you’re from Chicago Lucy, which is quite the big difference.
LUCY: Yeah, I came here with my mom and I drove from my house, which is like 45 minutes away. And I come to the door and I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, my roommate is from London. She traveled so far to be here.’ And I just lugged my like 200 pounds of stuff from 45 minutes away.
MEHER SAREEN: So on the first day actually, Professor Boye talked to my mother and I and told me as a joke that Lucy and I had been given the largest room on our floor because I’d come from the furthest away. And then he told my mom that he tells that to everyone. But it turns out that we actually do have the largest room on our floor. We feel very lucky that we’ve been able to make it a home of our own.
MADDIE: How would you say your guys’ lifestyles have kind of meshed together while you’re here?
LUCY: Absolutely perfectly. I’m so lucky to have Meher as my roommate. I don’t know what they do to match these roommates, but I’m so lucky.
MADDIE: Would you like to take me around your home away from home?
LUCY: Yes, of course we would.
MADDIE: All right, Meher, do you want to start with your bed area? I see you pulled out your cabinets from under your bed so you have some extra shelf space.
MEHER: I did. And the good thing about this, not only do I have bedside space for snacks and water and all these things in the middle of the night, but we like to have a lot of visitors in our room. So it creates more space for sitting and for hanging out.
MADDIE: Shall we take a little walk over to maybe your desk? Can you tell me a little bit about this area?
MEHER: So my desk… had an element added to it almost every single day that we’ve been here. The most recent addition would probably be the olive oil bottle that’s sitting there. That came as a result of one of my friends ordering takeout.
MADDIE: On to Lucy’s bed.
LUCY: Like my bed is a really special place to me at home. And I really like the setup that I have at home. It’s really comfortable. It’s like the place where I spend most of my time. So it was really important to me that my bed was like a really nice space here.
MADDIE: Yeah, it’s so beautifully made.
LUCY: So I have kind of like a striped comforter and then I have kinda a decorative pillow. I have some stuffed animals that I brought from home.
MADDIE: Alright, let’s go over to your closet areas.
MEHER: Here we have my laundry basket. I have a robe, towel, some dresses that I’m hanging out. These are my sheets that I changed.
MADDIE: I see there’s some sand on the ground here. Do you guys both like the beach?
MEHER: So no beaches in London, so the Clark Street Beach has become a very special place to me on this trip. I feel terrible for the amount of sand I brought into our room.
LUCY: I genuinely did not notice the sand until this moment. When like an hour ago, she was like, ‘I need to go borrow someone’s Hoover.’
[LAUGHTER]
LUCY: And I guess that’s some British word for vacuum, so I had no idea what she was talking about.
MADDIE: Well, I like that you’ve utilized your vertical space with the closet here.
MEHER: Thank you. I love the top.
MADDIE: What do you have hanging here?
MEHER: I have my Medill period sweatshirt with a denim jacket, which I’m actually yet to use and all my cardigans.
MADDIE: Is this your Chom dress?
MEHER: It’s actually not. My Chom dress is stuffed in a drawer.
MADDIE: Well, thank you so much for letting me have a little tour of your room. The Cherub News Network has really appreciated this little visit.
LUCY: Thank you for coming!
MADDIE: Yeah, of course!
MEHER: Bye!
MADDIE: Alright, have a good night!
LUCY: Good night!
