Zoe Romney of San Francisco said nights in the Great Room might start with movies but often ended with “unhinged karaoke.”
“It was very fun and very easy to bond with people, just by coming to the Great Room,” Romney said.
The Great Room is the large lounge on the first floor of Jones Hall. Students used the room to watch — and sang along to — movies like “Sing,” “Sing 2” and both “M3GAN” films.
After days of classes, cherubs gathered in the Great Room to talk, watch television and de-stress, Athan Joshi of Los Altos, California, said.
Jiayue Zou of McLean, Virginia, enjoyed a Hamilton sing-along in the Great Room because of the feeling of togetherness.
“It was really fun, even though I’m not actually a huge fan of Hamilton, but it was the fact that everyone came together and everyone was singing along and even harmonizing,” Zou said. “It was actually quite surprising to me, and I really felt like one big family.”
Joshi said the Great Room was “very lively” and “very happy.” He found that the Great Room was a good place to go when struggling.
“When you’re having a rough day and you have zero words in your trend story and you come to the Great Room, you always find some joy,” Joshi said.
Katherine Xu of Wellesley, Massachusetts, one of Romney’s movie-watching friends, said the Great Room was for everyone.
“When my friends and I were watching movies in the Great Room, a bunch of people would show up and just sit down,” Xu said. “And they were obviously welcome, because the Great Room is the only space that is purely just for everyone.”
