But sometimes, even the most devoted Cherub needs a break from lunch trays. Today, we’re taking you to three of our favorite eats around Evanston.

First up: bagels and orange juice at Mensch’s, a Jewish deli only a ten minute walk from campus. For cherub Alex Fagell, Mensch’s babka French toast is a taste of home, even from hundreds of miles away.

ALEX FAGELL: I’m Jewish, and back home, I go to a deli a lot, at least once a month. So having the chance to go to Mensch’s was a really good opportunity and really fun.

Sara Ortiz has been three times and tried a different sandwich each visit. But even more importantly than the food, the biggest thing bringing her to Mensch’s is the wait staff, who treat her like family.

SARA ORTIZ: The employees there are the best. I love them so much, they deserve the whole world.

If the Sargent chow mein isn’t cutting it for you, get your Asian fix at Eggs with Benefits, which is also a ten minute walk from campus. For Evan Yao, the rice bowl with curry and scrambled egg was a much needed comfort meal.

EVAN YAO: And I’m Asian American, so I really do miss having white rice. It was really filling, and I really like how all the flavors combined, and yeah, I really liked how all the Asian flavors worked really well with all the dishes.

For late night sweet treat runs, check out Kilwins for ice cream, fudge, and candy apples. Evelyn Du was wowed by the store’s abundance of flavors and their community-first outlook when she and her friends visited after the Fourth of July fireworks.

EVELYN DU: There were so many cherubs there, so there was a really long line. It went out the door. We got there really close to closing, so I think we were one of the last people in the store. But even though we were probably in there past their closing time of, I believe, 10:30, they still let us in, and they served us.

But when the day comes—and it’ll come—that your card declines and you’re forced to brave the trek to Sargent, let cherub Evelyn Kraber give you one tip to make your meals a little easier.

EVELYN KRABER: You get one plate that you eat there. And then you go and you throw as much as you can into a to-go container. And that’ll last you, like, two days. It’s all about the strategy.

[MUSIC]

From Cherubs Audio, this is Leah Hwang and Abi Paterniti.
