Cherubs spent their Sunday afternoons clubbing with fellow students in Fisk Hall classrooms and a Northwestern broadcast studio.<\/span><\/p>\n

The venues hosted three skills clubs: personal narrative, broadcast or photography.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In narrative, they were guided by writing prompts and edited in real-time by instructors Karen Springen, \u00a0Mary Lou Song, Erin Ailworth and Joe Grimm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPeople really connect with the first person stories,\u201d Springen said. \u201cThey can use all our prompts for the start of a great college essay, those New York Times little love stories, or they could be published as is.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cherub Lila Goldin, of Jupiter, Florida, said she enjoyed personal narrative because, \u201cwe really get little glimpses into people.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In broadcast club, cherubs got behind the desk in the McCormick Foundation Center\u2019s studio, supervised by instructor Carlin McCarthy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important because it helps students who have never had exposure to broadcast have a chance to experience that medium,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jason Wang, of Shanghai and Toronto was a frequent attendee. He said the club allowed him to explore his interest in TV journalism, which was inspired by his parents\u2019 habit of watching news shows.<\/span><\/p>\n

His favorite moment was singing \u201cO Canada\u201d on camera.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone was being really supportive,\u201d he said, \u201csaying I did a good job.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Photography is the newest club, McCarthy said. It was established in 2024 after the previous year\u2019s cherubs, including community and academic advisors Ashley Dong and Desiree Luo, showed a keen interest in photography.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe cherubs have been taking amazing photos,\u201d Dong said. \u201cI would encourage them to continue trying new things and to pick up that camera, even if they aren\u2019t super comfortable with it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
