{"id":7768,"date":"2025-07-22T21:04:26","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T21:04:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cherubs.medill.northwestern.edu\/2025\/?p=7768"},"modified":"2026-01-18T23:06:37","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T04:06:37","slug":"creating-careers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cherubs.medill.northwestern.edu\/2025\/07\/creating-careers\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting a lead on journalism careers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Growing up, Logan Kreisberg of Stamford, Connecticut, listened to his father fondly recall how a month-long radio, film and television program at Northwestern University in 1988 led him to a career he loved.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This summer, Kreisberg got a similar chance while attending the four-week Medill-Northwestern Journalism Institute. Kreisberg said the program reinforced his love for journalism and gave him a \u201cbetter understanding of the craft.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When asked about what specific lectures were most helpful in showing him what journalism looks like as a career, Kreisberg said Erin Ailworth\u2019s presentation \u201cNatural Disasters &amp; Other Breaking News.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cShe talked a lot about what it&#8217;s like to report on disasters and gave me an understanding of how serious and sometimes dangerous the work can be,\u201d Kreisberg said. \u201cIt was the first lecture, so it was my first look into what journalism can look like as a profession.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ailworth said her goal with her presentation was to provide students with insights on what it is like to be a breaking news journalist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI just hope students take away from that my enthusiasm,\u201d Ailworth said, \u201cand maybe it sparks some of their own.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Caroline Zeng of Beijing said this program showed her journalism is more than sitting at a desk and making calls, which she did at a previous reporting internship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI loved my time here,\u201d Zeng said. \u201cI think this strengthened my interest in journalism.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From CBS to the Wall Street Journal to Fox News, cherubs got to go on tours of professional newsrooms.
