{"id":5732,"date":"2024-07-16T21:06:10","date_gmt":"2024-07-16T21:06:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cherubs.medill.northwestern.edu\/2024\/?p=5732"},"modified":"2024-07-25T21:48:20","modified_gmt":"2024-07-25T21:48:20","slug":"cherubs-search-high-and-low-for-story-inspiration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cherubs.medill.northwestern.edu\/2024\/07\/cherubs-search-high-and-low-for-story-inspiration\/","title":{"rendered":"Cherubs search high and low for story inspiration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ice cream trucks selling sweet treats to kids on hot days, posters plastered on buildings and street lamps, conversations in coffee shops: story inspiration struck cherubs anytime and anywhere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Throughout the course of the four-week program, cherubs brainstormed for a variety of enterprise story assignments. They drew inspiration from unlikely places as they explored the nooks and crannies of Evanston.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI just walked around Evanston and found some businesses that seemed interesting to me,\u201d said Radian Hong of Rocklin, California. \u201cI finally found one called Plant Shop Evanston that was actually interesting and would let me interview somebody.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Arunima Chaudhary of Chicago said she agreed that going around town was helpful for finding story ideas. She did her feature story on a local church in Evanston.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe stained glass in the church was really pretty,\u201d Chaudhary said. \u201cI went exploring and found places that I really liked and that\u2019s where I got inspiration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hong said he learned where to find intriguing stories from instructors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey tell you to look for the things that you would want to tell your friends,\u201d Hong said. \u201cBe curious and ask questions about things you see in the community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Others were influenced by the guest speakers and topics they saw in the news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teresa Chen of Shanghai said she wanted to try political reporting when she came to the cherub program. She said she was interested in college protests and was inspired to write about them after listening to guest speaker Erin Ailworth, formerly of The Wall Street Journal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhen we listened to Erin Ailworth talk about her experience at Columbia, I thought, \u2018I\u2019m very close to this topic that I had been reading about for the past few months,\u2019\u201d Chen said. \u201cThis would be a good opportunity to explore it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some even found stories right on their phones. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Caroline McHugh of Chicago said she struggled finding a topic for her trend story until she realized every trend she knew was from looking at social media.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI literally said \u2018I\u2019m going to sit down. I\u2019m going to scroll TikTok until I have an idea,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cAnd that literally worked.
