{"id":4710,"date":"2024-07-16T20:47:34","date_gmt":"2024-07-16T20:47:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cherubs.medill.northwestern.edu\/2024\/?p=4710"},"modified":"2024-07-25T21:27:01","modified_gmt":"2024-07-25T21:27:01","slug":"watching-a-documentary-with-its-producer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cherubs.medill.northwestern.edu\/2024\/07\/watching-a-documentary-with-its-producer\/","title":{"rendered":"Watching a documentary with its producer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cherubs gathered for a Friday night feature of <i>Prisoner of Her Past<\/i> alongside its producer and 1971 cherub alum, Howard Reich.<\/p>\n<p>The hour-long documentary covers Reich\u2019s experience of learning more about his mother\u2019s PTSD, which was induced by her experience as a Holocaust survivor.<\/p>\n<p>Savannah Bond of Newton, Massachusetts, a history buff, said she found Reich\u2019s documentary engrossing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was something that was really interesting, because it was sort of history, but it was also right now,\u201d Bond said. \u201cIt was how this woman is living her life right now as a result of these events that happened so long ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Allie Deutsch of McLean, Virginia, said she was also moved by Reich\u2019s story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought that the video he produced was really powerful,\u201d she said. \u201cI was really blown away by how he went all the way to Europe, how he interviewed all those people, all to uncover the secrets of his mother&#8217;s own past.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Deutsch said she found that Reich\u2019s presentation demonstrated the opportunities that can arise from journalism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen he talked afterwards about how his work has been adapted into an opera, how he helped find an heir to a fortune stolen by the Nazis, I was like, \u2018Wow, this is what journalism can do.&#8217; It&#8217;s really, really fascinating,\u201d Deutsch said.<\/p>\n<p>After the documentary finished, Reich participated in a Q&amp;A session with the cherubs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was really cool that he was there to talk to us about it,\u201d Bond said. \u201cIt wasn&#8217;t just me watching the movie, we got to talk to the guy who actually made it and learn about his process and get more information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the Q&amp;A ended, Reich stayed to answer any additional questions. Nearly a dozen cherubs lined up to ask personal questions and have heart-to-heart conversations with him.<\/p>\n<p>Before the documentary, several cherubs had attended a Shabbat service.
