{"id":3626,"date":"2024-07-16T20:52:15","date_gmt":"2024-07-16T20:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cherubs.medill.northwestern.edu\/2024\/?p=3626"},"modified":"2024-07-25T21:49:56","modified_gmt":"2024-07-25T21:49:56","slug":"jonathan-eig","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cherubs.medill.northwestern.edu\/2024\/07\/jonathan-eig\/","title":{"rendered":"Lessons from a Pulitzer Prize-winning author"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In May 2024, Jonathan Eig won the Pulitzer Prize for his biography \u201cKing: A Life.\u201d A Medill and 1981 cherubs alum, he came to Northwestern to speak on June 26.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Audrey Noguera of South Orange, New Jersey, said it was \u201ccrazy\u201d to hear from a Pulitzer Prize winner, especially knowing he was once a cherub himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe were able to speak with someone who has done incredible things,\u201d Noguera said. \u201cAnd we could see that he was once in our position, too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Emerson Leger of The Plains, Virginia, said she also enjoyed hearing Eig speak, particularly about how he used his background as a journalist to do research for his book. Before he wrote biographies, Eig wrote for The Wall Street Journal and other publications. Leger said one of her biggest takeaways was the versatility of a journalism education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWith journalism, you learn to write clearly, think accurately and do research,\u201d Leger said. \u201cYou&#8217;re not afraid to go up to sources, and that really helps if you&#8217;re trying to write a book. I think that\u2019s why a lot of journalists become authors and why they are some of the most successful ones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anika Kini of Rye, New York, said she just began reading \u201cKing: A Life.\u201d She said Eig\u2019s background in journalism is evident in the pages of his book. For example, she said, he mixes historical fact and narrative storytelling in an unexpected yet compelling way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt reminds me that the skills you learn at cherubs are going to help you with whatever profession you go into,\u201d Kini said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">84 cherubs left Eig\u2019s lecture with signed copies of his book. Unexpectedly, Eig left with a signed book, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Noguera, who published a children\u2019s book titled \u201cFind Your Forest\u201d this year, said she thought it would be fun to exchange books with Eig.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt was really cool, because I was able to bond with a Pulitzer Prize winner over something we had in common,\u201d Noguera said. \u201cHe flipped through my book and gave it to his daughter to hold onto.
