{"id":911,"date":"2023-07-18T21:14:59","date_gmt":"2023-07-18T21:14:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cherubs.medill.northwestern.edu\/2023\/?p=911"},"modified":"2023-07-30T18:39:35","modified_gmt":"2023-07-30T18:39:35","slug":"cherubs-explore-specialized-workshops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cherubs.medill.northwestern.edu\/2023\/07\/cherubs-explore-specialized-workshops\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploring specialized workshops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When Jacqueline Caglar from Barrington, Illinois, went into the \u201cHigh School Video Critique\u201d workshop taught by Carlin McCarthy, Caglar expected the video sample from her school\u2019s broadcast team to be \u201cripped apart.\u201d Instead, Caglar said everyone enjoyed each others\u2019 videos and offered supportive feedback.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHigh School Video Critique\u201d was one of ten workshops cherubs could choose from. The workshops gave cherubs a break from lectures and allowed them to explore specialized topics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI learned a lot,\u201d Caglar said. \u201cSome advice that stuck out to me was to always over-record because you&#8217;re always going to need more footage than you think.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lexi Newsom from Overland Park, Kansas, attended the \u201cInvestigative Reporting Ideas You Can Use\u201d workshop taught by Elyssa Cherney. Cherubs learned how to use the Freedom of Information Act to access public records and brainstormed article ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe workshop definitely gave me a new direction,\u201d Newsom said. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize just how easy it was to get public records. I\u2019m excited to go back and use what I\u2019ve learned.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Newsom said she plans to investigate how her school district is breaking the law by not publicizing its financial records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bret Begun taught the \u201cProfile Writing\u201d workshop.
