This year\u2019s international cherubs hail from six countries: England, Canada, Colombia, Qatar, China, and South Korea. The ten international students describe their experience at Medill cherubs as enriching and impactful to their careers in journalism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Clara Martinez of London, England praised the hands-on nature of the program, which she said is more immersive than her school at home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve noticed a difference in the way that we\u2019re encouraged to be really creative and seek our own ideas and go out and do interviews,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s something that we don\u2019t get a lot of experience doing in my journalism classes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mariam Ahmed of Doha, Qatar said the cherubs curriculum allowed her to practice journalism \u201ccloser to reality.\u201d Compared to her school\u2019s focus on independent exams, she said the cherubs curriculum has felt more collaborative.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn real life, we\u2019re not going to only be sitting for exams,\u201d Ahmed said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to have work in the field, we\u2019re actually going to have to interview people\u2026and we actually get to do all that stuff in this program.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Junseo Lee from Seoul, South Korea agrees that the cherubs curriculum differs from what he\u2019s used to at his high school newspaper. He acknowledges that his school system prioritizes academic rigor and rote memorization instead of genuine interest. He said that it\u2019s \u201cgreat to see\u201d that his fellow cherubs are \u201cactually passionate about journalism here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For some cherubs, cultural differences pose a challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like a lot of people here immediately know the context of what people are talking about,\u201d said Angelica Pardo of Bogot\u00e1, Colombia, \u201cespecially political context and social context.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Although she knows about U.S. history, Pardo said that she\u2019s not as knowledgeable about the inner workings of the country.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s been a little bit of a struggle trying to ask people, \u2018Wait, what\u2019s that, what\u2019s Watergate?\u2019\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite traveling thousands of miles to arrive in Evanston, Illinois, the experience has been worth it for international cherubs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was really thankful for the amount of things we got to learn,\u201d Christina Lin of Beijing, China, said. \u201cAnd getting to hear from actual journalists in the field was something really special.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
