{"id":1011,"date":"2023-07-18T20:48:18","date_gmt":"2023-07-18T20:48:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cherubs.medill.northwestern.edu\/2023\/?p=1011"},"modified":"2023-07-30T19:01:04","modified_gmt":"2023-07-30T19:01:04","slug":"journalism-through-a-cinematic-lens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cherubs.medill.northwestern.edu\/2023\/07\/journalism-through-a-cinematic-lens\/","title":{"rendered":"Journalism through a cinematic lens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inside the dimmed forum of McCormick Foundation Center, 84 cherubs relived some of the greatest moments of journalism as they watched reporters investigate a president, a media tycoon and a case of sexual abuse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cherubs experienced multiple tension-filled moments as they watched \u201cAll the President\u2019s Men,\u201d \u201cCitizen Kane\u201d and \u201cSpotlight.\u201d Behind this cinematic journey is instructor John Kupetz, who has led this tradition of movie screenings and discussions for more than a decade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI hope that they take away some of the journalistic principles that are shown in these movies,\u201d Kupetz said. \u201cThese are films that are about journalism, but they&#8217;re also great films at their own rate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These movie nights have been a cornerstone of the cherub experience, teaching invaluable lessons about journalism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMovies definitely need to be part of the cherub experience because we may be learning about how to be journalists right now, but it&#8217;s also fun to look back and see what other journalists have done in the past,\u201d Jacqueline Caglar of Barrington, Illinois, said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Though the films may all be journalism-themed, Matthew Kim of Los Altos, California, said each movie offered him a different perspective on journalism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI appreciated how much and how well \u2018Citizen Kane\u2019 explained that journalism is something powerful, and it can corrupt you,\u201d Kim said. \u201cFor \u2018All the President\u2019s Men,\u2019 I really liked how it spent time focusing on how hard journalism is but also how rewarding it can be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The movie experience doesn\u2019t end there.
